A United States F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet has been shot down by enemy fire over Iran, U.S. officials confirmed. One of the aircraft’s two crew members has been rescued, Israeli media first reported. U.S. officials confirmed the reports in statements to CBS News and Axios.
A search for the second crew member is ongoing. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Military Times “the president has been briefed” on the downed fighter jet.

Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve leaders warn that the Air Force must modernize their fighter fleets along with the Active force, or they risk losing combat-tested talent and making the reserve forces irrelevant in future operations. Speaking at a media roundtable during AFA’s Warfare Symposium in February, Lt. Gen. John P. Healy, chief of the Air Force Reserve, said more than 80 percent of his aircraft inventory are legacy jets with limited future lifespans.

U.S. military aircraft heading from the United States to the Middle East have been refused permission to stop off at an air base in Italy, an Italian government source has told Defense News. The request to land at Sigonella air base in Sicily was issued to Italian authorities after the aircraft had already taken off from the U.S., Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported on Tuesday.

When Air Combat Command began developing a simplified aircraft readiness metric two years ago, the aim was to turn voluminous data points into a single number that could enable commands at every echelon to know exactly how many planes they could get off the ground on any given day. The international joint venture Edgewing has been awarded its first Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) design and development contract, valued at £686 million. The GCAP Agency, which manages the multibillion dollar flagship project on behalf of the UK, Italy and Japan, issued the contract on Wednesday. It runs until June 2026. Mirroring GCAP’s national sponsors, Edgewing is comprised of England’s BAE Systems, Italy’s Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd.
