France, India finalize $8.8 billion Rafale fighter deal

Indian defense officials have agreed to an $8.8 billion deal to buy 36 Rafale jet fighters from French military aviation firm Dassault. The formal procurement pact is expected to be signed within three weeks, with initial deliveries of the jets to begin in 18 months according to reports by Indian news outlet NDTV. The sale had been expected to be completed earlier this year, ahead of a planned visit to India by French president François Hollande.

Kerry: U.S. could have fired on Russian jets in Baltic Sea

Secretary of State John Kerry said a U.S. warship in the Baltic Sea could have opened fire on Russian fighter jets buzzing it earlier this week. The unarmed fighter planes flew within 75 feet of the missile destroyer USS Donald Cook on Monday, making "numerous, close-range and low altitude passes," a U.S. European Command statement said. They returned with a Russian attack helicopter Tuesday "in a simulated attack profile and failed to respond to repeated safety advisories," the U.S. Navy said.

Russia to develop new strategic extra heavy airlift aircraft

The Russian aviation industry will deal with development of a new strategic airlift aircraft for the Armed Forces and the civilian market, Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said on Friday. USA Reinforces Military Aviation in Turkey and Qatar

The United States deployed more military aircraft in Turkey and Qatar, as a sign of the importance that this country gives to aircraft in the fight against the Islamic State, said today the newspaper Stars and Stripes. The deployment of Marine EA-6B Prowler jammer planes to Turkey came amid growing concerns about the potential anti-aircraft threat from ISIS and other militant groups in Syria. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria claimed Thursday that its "air defense" fighters had downed a Syrian government warplane in the southern Syrian province of Suwayda. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group based in London, said the pilot safely ejected and was not captured.

Companies team for Danish military aircraft contract

Danish company Flatirons Solutions has teamed with Airbus Defense and Space in a bid to supply the Danish Air Force with Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft. Under the agreement signed Thursday, Flatirons will provide its CORENA Suite software for production and ongoing management of Danish Eurofighter Typhoon maintenance publications, including airframe and engine manuals.
